Health & Safety Committee's July News

District Attorney Seth Williams Presentation Postponed

With regret, the Health & Safety Committee must postpone the presentation by District Attorney Seth Williams and the recognition ceremony for outstanding service by selected Ninth District police officers due to participants' illness and/or unforeseen conflicts. The program has been tentatively rescheduled for LSNA's October 2010 meeting. More details to come in the fall!

This Month's Health & Safety Reports

Please review the Ninth District's Logan Square neighborhood crime report, and the Health & Safety Committee's committee report. You may also view the Ninth District's reports and other advisories at the web site built by Police Officer James Quick on his own time as a service to the community. Please otherwise visit the Health & Safety Committee's web pages for links to more comprehensive crime information and other resources relating to the health and safety of the Logan Square community.

Please note the large volume of thefts from autos in the Logan Square Neighborhood. The Ninth District reports that slightly over 50% of all car break-ins during the past month involved GPS devices. The District has also previously reported that thieves recognize the marks left on windshields by GPS suction cups, attracting break-ins even if GPS devices are not visible. Please make an effort to remind your visitors from out of town to remove all valuables from cars parked on the street.

Next Health & Safety Committee Meeting

Please note that the Health & Safety Committee and Subcommittee on the Homeless will not meet in August. Please attend the September 1, 2010 meeting at the Atria (former Sterling Glen) at 20th & Race Streets. Please RSVP to lsnahs@gmail.com and to be informed of changes in time or date and the location. To help make efficient use of board and committee meeting time, please email lsnahs@gmail.com with any health and safety-related concerns before the next board or committee meeting.

Health & Safety Committee Officers for 2010-2011

Following nominations by Committee members and a committee vote, David Searles and Jacquie Winslow are unanimously renominated to the LSNA board as the co-chairs for the Health & Safety Committee during the 2010-11 year. Thanks, David and Jacquie!

Street Lighting Update

The Committee is now preparing an informational packet that will provide developers and potential funders alike with an outline LSNA's street lighting priorities (as determined in a public meeting this spring). This will enable LSNA to more effectively encourage developers to provide desired street lighting and encourage political representatives to allocate funds for this purpose. Please volunteer to help the Street Lighting Subcommittee with this important effort!

Air Quality Alerts

Please visit the City of Philadelphia's air quality alert web site for more information and up-to-the-minute advisories on air quality and how it can affect you and your loved ones. Please also make an effort to check on elderly/inform neighbors.

RecycleBank

Philadelphia Recycling Awards, powered by Recycle Bank, is now up and running. To register, go to [the RecycleBank web site] or call 888-769-7960. A sticker will be issued for placement on your primary recycling container, and points will then be placed in the participant's account. Based on how much your area overall has recycled, you will be awarded points that may be redeemed for offers at restaurants, stores, etc.
