September 16, 2019 Streets Department Announces Temporary Closure of Race Street Rail Crossing Bicyclists and pedestrians advised of detours PHILADELPHIA – A malfunction of the electric gates at the Race Street crossing to the Schuylkill River Trail has caused an unsafe condition for users of the crossings, announced Streets Commissioner Carlton Williams. The gates were closed Friday, September 13th and will remain closed until repairs can be made. The following are alternatives for access to the bike trail: • Access ramp at Market Street • Access point on Martin Luther King Drive across from the Art Museum • Stairs at Walnut Street • Pedestrian bridge in Schuylkill River Park, at Locust Street and points south. For the duration of the closure, Streets Department crews will make every effort to minimize the inconvenience to affected commuters.
