Street Closures and Bus Detours for Welcome America

City announces street closures and SEPTA bus detours for Wawa Welcome America kickoff event Saturday



PHILADELPHIA, PA (June 25, 2014) Streets will be closed in parts of Center City in connection with the opening of the annual Wawa Welcome America! festival this Saturday. Delays can be expected and motorists are advised to use alternate routes, avoid this vicinity, if possible, allow for extra driving time and generally proceed with caution. Wawa Welcome America! and City officials are encouraging festival goers to walk to the event.

Wawa Welcome America’s Liberty Block Party kicks off on the west side of Broad Street in Center City near The Shops at Liberty Place, 1625 Chestnut St., beginning at noon through 10 p.m. on June 28.

Roads are scheduled to be closed in the following areas, beginning at 5 a.m. and reopening after midnight:  
        Chestnut Street, between 15th and 18th streets
        16 th Street, between Ranstead and Sansom streets
        Ionic Street, between 16th and 17th streets
        Ludlow Street, between 17th and 18th streets
 
Signage indicating “No Parking/Stopping” will be posted early Saturday morning. Bus routes also will be detoured in the immediate area. Bus lines and roads are scheduled to be restored after midnight.
 
SEPTA will reroute its Chestnut Street buses: Routes 21, 42, 9 as well as establish detours for Route 2 on 16th Street. The following is a description of the detoured bus lines:
.
Route 9 Southbound via Market Street: Right/15th St., Left/South Penn Square, Left/Juniper St., Right/Market St., Right/4th St., regular route.

Route 21  Eastbound via Chestnut Street: Left/20th St., Right/Market St., Right/15th St., Left/South Penn Square, Left/Juniper St., Right/Market St., Right/12th St., Left/Chestnut St., regular route.

Route 42 Eastbound via Chestnut Street: Left/20th St., Right/Market St., Right/15th St., Left/South Penn Square, Left/Juniper St., Right/Market St., Right/12th St., Left/Chestnut St., regular route.

Northbound via 16th Street: Right/Locust St., Left/Broad St., Right/South Penn Square, Left/Juniper St., Left/John F. Kennedy Blvd., Right/16th St., regular route.

Bus lines will return to their regularly scheduled routes after midnight.

The Liberty Block Party will offer Philadelphia residents and visitors an opportunity to explore the city’s diverse food scene and some of its finest live entertainment. Legendary R&B group New Edition will be on hand to help kick off Wawa Welcome America! and be honored by Mayor Michael Nutter. Matthew Schuler, a finalist from Season 5 of NBC’s The Voice, and jazz soloist Kellylee Evans will be among the many performers. Entry and entertainment are free, food and beverages must be purchased.
