JFK/Market St Bus Lanes - 7/21/20 Mtg Follow-up

In July 2020 Jeannette Brugger pulled together a meeting to discuss the progress on the Market/JFK safety project.  During that meeting we presented a plan to convert the right most travel lanes on each street between 15th and 20th to a bus-only lane.  This is the busiest bus corridor in the region and improving the speed and reliability of bus service on this corridor is critical to fighting climate change and providing equitable transportation to all Philadelphia residents. CONNECT: Philadelphia's Strategic Transportation Plan contains more information about the benefits of shifting trips to transit.

After our 7/21/20 meeting we continued to meet with community groups.  We made adjustments to the project based on the feedback we heard, most notably stopping the bus-only lane at 19th on JFK.  We received support letters late last year and again in February of 2021. Based on the feedback we are proceeding with an 18-month pilot in a partnership between the City, SEPTA, and PennDOT.    The construction activities consist of signage and pavement markings and should be completed over the next several weeks with minimal disruption.   We will evaluate the project based on bus speed and reliability, transit ridership, automobile travel times including the effects on parallel corridors, and rider and resident feedback.
