Condolences, Funeral Mass, Donations to the Family

Dear friends and neighbors:

By now, most of you have heard or read about the horrific and tragic murder of our neighbor and fellow Spring Garden Civic Association member Gerry Grandzol, on Thursday September 7th, at 8:00 PM near his home on the 1500 block of Melon Street.

Gerry was just returning home in his car with his two year old daughter and dog Oscar when he was approached by two armed robbers, intent on a robbery and carjacking. The police report that the criminals shot Gerry when he did not act fast enough to give over his car, which had his daughter in the back seat.

Our hearts go out to Gerry's wife Kristin, their two beautiful young daughters, family members, nearby neighbors, and friends whose lives Gerry touched, and who will never be the same after the senseless loss of our unique and well-loved colleague.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held for Gerry at 10:30 AM this Wednesday September 13, at  the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, 18th St. and the Parkway.

Garefino Funeral ( has posted an obituary online, which has links for those who wish to send a card, flowers, private condolences, and/or sign a guestbook.

Also, a "Go Fund Me" Memorial Fund account has been set up by friends of the family, if you would like to make a donation. The link is

At an appropriate time, the SGCA will be hosting a meeting with our City representatives, 9th District Captain and others to discuss crime in the neighborhood, police coverage, and steps we can take to make our community safer.

The SGCA and SGCDC will also be working to get more security cameras installed at homes and businesses in the neighborhood. The prevalence of home security cameras in the vicinity of the shooting aided the police significantly in quickly apprehending the perpetrators.

With deep condolences to Kristin, Violet, Rose, family members, friends, neighbors, and all who knew and loved Gerry.
